If you've worked at a fast food chain, what are some things customers don't know?
I work at McDonald's, and during my time working there, I've learned a number of things that customers may not know.
***DISCLAIMER: I work at an Australian McDonald's so things may be completely different in your country.
- The onions are not fresh. The onions at McDonald's are made by adding water to dehydrated onions. Then, they are put in a container with holes and we shake it over the hamburgers. Honestly, when she wasn't a McDonald's employee, she thought onions were cool. However, some burgers do contain onion slices which, as far as I understand, are fresh.
- There are cameras in the drive-thru. Again, I had no idea about this, but when we take your order at the speaker box, we can see you. Once, I saw a man pick his snot while he was taking his order. We can see our customers as clearly as in the image below (these photos do not belong to me).
- The food is not always fresh. Burgers, nuggets, etc. are not made fresh every time someone orders them. They are stored in these trays (shown below), where they are kept warm and used as needed. However, if someone asks for fresh food, no matter how annoying, we make it fresh for them. Food also has timers, so we discard it once it expires.
- The ice cream machine is rarely broken. I have no idea why McDonald's has the stereotype that the ice cream machine is always broken, when in fact it isn't. Where I work, we have two ice cream machines, so even if one was broken, we would still have the other, and it's very rare for both to break at the same time. If we can't sell you ice cream, it's because the ice cream machine is seriously broken, needs to be refilled, or is being cleaned. During my time working for McDonald's, the ice cream machine has only broken once. (Also, this is the exact same milkshake/sundae machine we have where I work, only we have two.)
- Ice cream, shakes, milk, etc, are kept in bags. The ice cream and milkshake mix that we use to fill the machine is stored in plastic bags. Even the milk we use to make coffee comes in a bag. The only exception is special milks, such as almond milk, soy milk, etc.
- We don't wash our hands or change our gloves as much as we're supposed to. I could be handling cash and then go make fries with the same pair of gloves I've been wearing my entire shift. We're supposed to wash our hands/change our gloves at least every hour and when we move to a different station, but most people don't bother. I don't think most people wash their hands. However, we do wear gloves and I try to change them as often as possible. On top of that, they're those kind of annoying gloves that tear easily, like these:
I can not think of anything else. I hope you enjoyed reading this!
