Is it good to eat a lot of watermelon?

The fruit of the summer….to not stop eating it, but even for this natural delicacy, almost a wild card, there are limits since, if consumed in reasonable quantities, watermelons should not produce serious side effects. However, if you eat a lot of fruit every day, you may experience problems from having too much lycopene or potassium. (lycopene is what gives it its fuchsia color).

watermelons _they are mostly  water, about 92 percent .

Each juicy bite has significant levels of vitaminsA, B6 and C , many lycopenes, antioxidants and amino acids. There is even a modest amount of potassium. Plus, this quintessential summer snack is fat-free, very low sodium, and only 40 calories per cup.

BUT, Consuming more than 30 mg of lycopene a day could cause nausea, diarrhea, indigestion, and bloating, according to the American Cancer Society.

People with severe hyperkalemia, or too much potassium in their blood, or diabetics should probably eat no more than one cup of watermelon a day, which has less than 140 mg of potassium. According to the National Institutes of Health, hyperkalemia can cause an irregular heartbeat and other  cardiovascular problems, as well as reduced muscle control.

Watermelon lovers are also warned to be mindful of their sugar intake. "Even though the sugar in watermelon occurs naturally, [watermelon] is still relatively high in sugar"

Loading up on water-heavy foods like watermelon can be tempting for those looking to lose weight because they help you feel full, but Lemond warns against going to extremes. "Eating more fruits and vegetables of any kind naturally helps lower the total calories (energy) of the diet ," she said. "We know that people who consume higher amounts of fruits and vegetables generally have healthier body weights. However, I don't recommend eating only watermelon... You will lose weight, but that weight will be mostly muscle." Watermelon is a great hydrating food, so keep it alongside other plant foods that offer other benefits. Variety is always key."
