Is it true that bananas have too much sugar for monkeys?
Monkeys in the wild do not eat bananas. Never.
They don't even come into contact with them unless they live near human settlements where they are grown, since bananas (at least, edible bananas) are a product developed for human consumption.
A monkey's natural diet consists of insects, flowers, nuts, sometimes lizards, and wild fruits...
... But zero bananas.
The fruit that we humans grow to eat generally has much more sugar and much less protein than fruit found in nature.
Giving a monkey a banana is like giving it a giant piece of cake. It is much more sugar than their bodies can tolerate and can even cause them to develop diabetes and other chronic conditions typically seen in humans who consume too much sugar.
As a result, zoos around the world have begun to ban the practice of feeding bananas to monkeys.
So if monkeys don't normally eat bananas, how did the association between the two develop?
When the United States occupied the Philippines between 1898 and 1946, the Filipino people were often referred to as "tailless monkeys."
Since bananas are prevalent in the food culture of the Philippines, the connection between "monkeys" and bananas was mistakenly born.
